Food Allergies and Recalls

I just have to get on my soap box today.

Several years ago, I signed up for the FDA recall list. Every day, my inbox is filled with emails listing all the products that are being recalled for safety reasons.

While I understand that sometimes it’s difficult to keep track of everything, these companies have got to do a better job at not letting things leave their site when things get contaminated.

Just last week I saw one manufacturer had to recall their kettle corn because some of the bags were ACCIDENTALLY filled with cheese popcorn instead of kettle corn.

It sounds trivial, but if you have a life threatening milk allergy, it is anything but trivial to ACCIDENTALLY ingest a small particle of milk from a dirty bag.

So, parents, do your own due diligence! Limit the processed foods that come into your home. Read the label EVERY time. And pay attention to recalls!

Since most recalls do not get covered by the media, you MUST do your own research here.

I recommend that you sign up for the FDA Alert emails. This will send you an email whenever a recall has been issued. It’s not fool-proof, but it may prevent a catastrophe at your house.
